Summertime in Aspen

In 1805, a little silver mining town was discovered that has grown into a picturesque worldwide destination boasting breathtaking landscapes, from lush forests and wildflower meadows to crystal-clear rivers and towering peaks. Summer in Aspen is marked by a lively calendar of events, including world-class music festivals, outdoor concerts, food and wine gatherings, and art exhibitions. Theatre Aspen

Theatre Aspen brings the magic of live performances with Broadway actors and actresses to the Rockies, showcasing an array of acclaimed productions that captivate audiences at the intimate Hurst Theatre. Each summer, this renowned theater company presents a diverse lineup of plays and musicals featuring talented actors and creative teams from across the country. From main performances to special events, the schedule for Theatre Aspen is the following:

Music and Festivals 

Aspen's summer music festivals are a highlight of the season, drawing music lovers from around the globe to experience world-class performances in a breathtaking mountain setting. Whether attending a concert at Harris Hall or sitting on a blanket just outside, you will be treated to women classical masterpieces.

The Aspen Music Festival and School, one of the country's premier classical music festivals, features a rich program of orchestral concerts, chamber music, and solo recitals, showcasing both renowned artists and rising stars. This series goes from June 26-August 18 and has the following schedule: 

  • June 28: Chamber Symphony featuring Daniil Trifonov playing Mozart’s “Jeunehomme” Piano Concerto.
  • June 30: A special 75th Anniversary Party and a Festival Orchestra performance with Renée Fleming.
  • July 1: "Music for New Bodies," a contemporary opera performance conducted by Timothy Weiss.
  • July 24: A Mariachi Celebration.
  • August 12, 15, 17: Mozart’s "The Marriage of Figaro" at Wheeler Opera House.

 

Jazz Aspen Snowmass adds a vibrant mix with its popular June and Labor Day festivals, presenting an eclectic array of jazz, rock, blues, and soul. These festivals create a dynamic musical tapestry that enriches Aspen's cultural scene, offering unforgettable experiences against the backdrop of the stunning Rocky Mountains. The Labor Day Experience goes from August 30-September 1 and the lineup is as follows: 

  • Friday, August 30: Brandi Carlile will headline, with Lukas Nelson opening the evening.
  • Saturday, August 31: Sting will headline, with performances by OneRepublic and Michael Marcagi.
  • Sunday, September 1: Tim McGraw will close out the festival, preceded by The Black Crowes and The War and Treaty.

General admission tickets are currently available for $339 plus fees, with prices expected to increase later in the year. VIP passes are also available, providing access to exclusive areas, gourmet dining, and premium open bars.

Outdoor Activities

Aspen's summer outdoor activities offer something for everyone, from exhilarating hikes and mountain biking trails to serene fly fishing spots and scenic river rafting adventures. Some of the most popular events include:

Snowmass Rodeo (June 19-August 21).  A beloved summer tradition celebrating its 50th anniversary showcases thrilling rodeo events, including bull riding and barrel racing, combined with family-friendly activities and a festive Western atmosphere. 

Elk Camp Gondola (starting June 21): Provides access to the Lost Forest, Elk Camp Restaurant, and Snowmass Bike Park, offering over 90 miles of trails (Snowmass Guide).

Cultural & Culinary Events 

 Aspen's culinary and art scenes create a rich, immersive cultural experience that captivates residents and visitors alike.

Heritage Fire (July 27): A fiery celebration of open-flame cooking, where top chefs from around the country showcase their skills by preparing a diverse array of dishes over live fires, creating a feast for both the eyes and the palate.

Snowmass Wine Festival (September 14): The Snowmass Wine Festival offers a delightful weekend of wine tastings, gourmet food pairings, a silent auction, and live entertainment, all set against the stunning backdrop of Snowmass Village.

Aspen ArtWeek is an immersive cultural celebration that spans various venues throughout Aspen, offering a dynamic lineup of art exhibitions, interactive workshops, performances, and artist talks. It provides a unique opportunity for visitors to engage with local and international artists, explore diverse art forms, and experience Aspen's creative spirit firsthand.

Aspen Art Museum’s annual ArtCrush summer gala is the culminating event of Aspen ArtWeek which will celebrate three visionaries in their fields: architect Shigeru Ban, artist Jacqueline Humphries, and composer and artist Jason Moran.

Featuring a live auction, drinks, dinner, music, and dancing, the ArtCrush summer gala is one of the most anticipated events of the summer in Aspen. Coinciding with the Museum’s 45th anniversary and the 10th anniversary of its current Shigeru Ban–designed building, the 2024 ArtCrush gala will mark the first time that multiple leaders working across creative disciplines will receive the Aspen Award for Art.
